I long for a world without the means or desire to harm others. I desire a world where domination and exploitation are impossible because they are unthinkable. I want to live in a world shaped by ideas of Beloved Community.
When it comes to weapons, I remember Angela Davis calling for peace, beginning with the disarming of police and military. She later described the abolition of prisons as a life-giving, transformative act in an interview on Democracy Now in (I think) 2019. I am of the belief that an end to violence can be achieved through the healing of trauma and the meeting of needs.
I introduced myself as a “soft target” at the Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners meeting on 01Jun2022. Meaning I own zero weapons. I want zero weapons. I want to inflict zero harm. I want as much healing for as many folks as possible on the grandest possible scale. That can only come from examining our own trauma on the intrapersonal and interpersonal scale, understanding our own needs on the individual scale, and helping each other heal and meet those needs by being vulnerable, talking to each other, and listening to each other. This means stepping outside the greedy paradigms of capitalism and leaning into our love for one another. This is in all of our best interests.
I don’t want anyone to feel the need for a weapon of any sort because I don’t want to live in a world where we feel like we have to be on the defensive all the time just to exist. The world as it is is terrible, and we can do better. We are the result of three billion years of evolution. It’s time for us to act like it.
